GIRLS MEET

Western set three school records and ran away with the title in the Howard County meet at Northwestern, lapping the field with a score of 125, followed by Northwestern at 58, Eastern at 50 and Taylor with 7.

Western's Norah Ewing set two school records with wins in the 100 dash in :12.6 and the 200 in :25.81. Ewing also won the 300 hurdles (:50.77). Teammate Allison McKitrick set another Western record in winning the 100 hurdles in :15.37, which also set a new meet record.

"We knew coming in that Allison and Norah are special kids. They're fast. They're just great athletes," Jewell said. "Sometimes that athleticism [from other sports] doesn't necessarily translate, but in the case of these two, [Thursday] night they were on it and we had the help of a little bit of a tailwind. They really lit it up. They're the kind of athletes that when you have a championship-type setting, they can kick it up a notch or two and that's really good for the team."

Western's Ashlyn Pownall won the 400 (1:04.88), Kendall DePoy won the 1,600 (5:55.63), Hattie Harlow won the 3,200 (13:56.27), Ellyse Walden swept the throws, winning discus (131-4.5) and shot put (41-5.5) with meet-record throws.

The Panthers swept the relays. Ashlyn Pownall, Ewing, Kenzie Moore and McKitrick won the 4x100 (:51.9). Pownall, Joy Marley, Gracie Shade and McKitrick won the 4x400 (4:22.21). And the Panthers won the 4x800 relay with Sam Williams, Lucy Schave, Katherine DiPaola and Mary Claire DiPaola clocking 11:49.0.

"It's great to come into a championship meet like we had to see what we can do and how that's going to apply to a championship like [next] Tuesday night in our sectional," Jewell said.

Northwestern's Zoie Scheiffer won high jump (4-6), Bryella Lefforge won long jump (15-6.5) and Emma Baker won pole vault (11-0). Additionally, Avery Nielson was second in shot put with a school-record effort of 37-11, and Scheiffer was second in the 100 hurdles in a school-record :15.53.

"We tried to pick a few key events [Thursday] before rolling into sectionals," NW coach Josh Perry said. "The girls really took advantage of the lighter load and dropped [two] school records in the same meet. We are moving in the right direction at the right time and I'm excited to see how far we can go into the state tournament."

Eastern's Ava Kantz won the 800 (2:39.33).

BOYS MEET

Northwestern edged Western to win the Howard County meet at Northwestern. The Tigers won with a score of 93, Western had 89, Eastern 43 and Taylor 19.

Northwestern's Declan Aaron won the 100-meter dash (:11.27) and 200 (:22.72), Sam Martin won the 110 hurdles (:16.63), Peyton Tarrh won the 300 hurdles (:43.44), Braxton Schieffer won high jump (6 feet, 1 inch), and Michael Groves won long jump (19-2)

The Tigers swept the relays. Groves, Tarrh, La'Ron Johnson and Aaron won the 4x100 relay (:44.91). Tarrh, Bryan Burkhalter, DeWayne Perrigen and Groves won the 4x400 (3:37.91). And Ryland Barnes, Mason Broeker, Isaac Everson and Burkhalter won the 4x400 (9:18.37).

"Absolutely amazing efforts everywhere from the boys," NW coach Alex Pier said. "The discussion all week was every place and point matters. When the track meet comes down to getting it done in the 4x400, everybody has done their job all night. That's exactly what we had happen. I am so proud of every member of our team."

Western's Brett Kallio won the 400 dash (:53.78), Camden Raab won the 1,600 (4:47.75), Maddox Carver won the 3,200 (10:32.33), and Milan Bennett won high jump (12-6).

Western coach Gary Jewell said the meet was "close! The way I scored it previously, it was going to be close and I thought we had a good shot at winning, as long as we didn't have an uh-oh moment. I thought toward the end of the meet we were going to pick up a bunch of points that we did. Kind of disappointed [to lose] by four points, but we gave it our best shot. They just wanted it a little bit more than we did."

Eastern's Andrew Cavazos won the discus (128 feet, 2 inches) and shot put, setting a new county record in the put at 56-8.25, and Obadiah Greene won the 800 (2:14.23).
