WESTERN VS NORTHWESTERN Northwestern freshman Rachel Mast was a triple winner as the Tigers topped Western 90-42 on a cold night at the Panthers' track Wednesday. Mast took first in the high jump, and also ran legs of the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. In the 4x100, Mast joined Johannah Hetzner, Caitlyn Wilson and Kailyn DeVault. Mast and DeVault teamed with Kaylee Watson and Kailey Kidwell on the winning 4x400 relay. Watson was also tops in the 400. Kate Bilkey took first in the 1,600, Casey Lechner was tops in the 3,200 and Lauryn Fackler was first in the 800. In field events, Brianna Hahn won long jump, Jaimy LaLonde took the top toss in shot put, and Tory Combs threw for first in discus. "It was a pretty good meet for us, especially being out in the cold and not having a meet for awhile," Northwestern coach Mary Clem said. "Coming out with a win and having decent times, it's nice to get a little confidence going into the [Hoosier] Conference meet." Originally scheduled for Friday, the Hoosier Conference meet at West Lafayette has been rescheduled due to wet track and field conditions. It will be rescheduled for either Monday or Tuesday of next week. On the boys side, Western topped Northwestern 103-29 behind triple-winners Mica and Zhe'Don Beard. Mica Beard won the long jump in 17-11.5, the 300 hurdles in 43.5 and joined Alex Newman, Josh Coleman and Zhe'Don Beard in the winning 4x100 relay (45.4). Zhe'Don Beard was first in the 100 (11.47) and the 200 (23.79). Nick Hackler was a double winner in the 400 (53.41) and joining the 4x400 relay team with Brady Dittfield, Quaylen Calvin and Elijah Woodring (3:41.70). Andrew Granfield won the 1,600 (5:00), Tyler Gilbert was tops in the discus (169-5, 2nd best throw in school history) and shot put (46-5.5), Zach Zentz turned in the top pole vault (10-6), and Hunter Purtee won the 3,200 (11:54.29). "We were happy to get another shot of having a track meet," Northwestern coach Dave Stevens said. "I feel for the guys. They are trying to keep their spirits up with it being our fifth meet of the season with the conference and sectional coming up. Normally, it would have been our ninth meet. I am not disappointed with our performance, because we had a lot of season and personal bests." Spencer Hutchins was a double winner for Northwestern. Hutchins won the 800 run (2:10), and was part of the 4x800 relay team that won in 9:10. Joining Hutchins was Elijah Collins, Caleb Treadway and Brayden Chou. Austin O'Neal was the Tigers' other winner in the high jump (5-8). |
