BOYS TRACK Western won the annual track and field invite at Hamilton Heights, though final team scores were not yet available as of press time due to timing issues in the final few events. Unofficially, the Panthers finished with 100.5 to take first place. "We know it's somewhere right around 100," Panthers coach Gary Jewell said. A pair of Panthers enjoyed a big day as Josh Everetts and Tyler Gilbert were both double winners, while each broke a meet record. Everetts took first in the 1,600 at 4:30.82, breaking the Big Orange meet record of 4:31.43 set by Western grad and current Indiana State assistant girls track and field coach Kyle Walsh in 2004. Everetts also anchored the winning 4x800, teaming with Elijah Woodring, Andrew Granfield and Nick Hackler in 8:32.72. Gilbert took first in the discus with a monster toss of 164-3 "into a very stiff head wind," according to Jewell. That broke Eastern grad Blake Donson's 2010 toss of 159-10. Gilbert was also tops in the shot put at 47-0. "Our throwers and Josh Everetts carried us," Jewell said, noting that Ricky Beardon (4th in shot put) and Luke Lushin (3rd in discus) performed well and are continuing to improve. "It was nice to be able to put everything together," Jewell said. "We had good performances in a lot of places. That's the way it's got to be as we progress. We have to improve everywhere. It's got to be a team effort." Peru's Jonah Lester led Peru with a win in the high jump, clearing 6-2, and won the 400-meter dash. And Tori Forrest was tops in the 300 hurdles. |
