Panthers sweep Titans in track openers

GIRLS TRACK

WESTERN 61, EASTERN 61, CASS 45

Both Western and Eastern came away with five wins apiece, while Cass had six winning events.

Western’s Nicole Hampshire won the 3,200-meter run (12:48). Maddie Shepherd was tops in the long jump (14-10.5). Miranda Pressgrove took first in the high jump (4-6), and Taylor Nunan got the top height in the pole vault (8-0). The Panthers also won the 4x800 relay in 10:57.49.

It was a good track meet,” Western coach Brandon Shawhan said. “Eastern and Cass have a lot of good talent. I think our girls ran well, and we had a lot of good depth. I see a lot of improvement in our girls, Eastern and Cass. It was a great meet among the three conference schools.

Avery Ewing led Eastern as a double winner. Ewing won the 400 run, and the 800 run (2:42). Jenny Keith was tops in the discus (97-9). Carlie Jones took first in the 1,600 run (6:01.5), and Danielle Reed won the shot put (33-2.25).

“It was a good performance,” Eastern coach Michael Goodspeed said.

Brooke Langley and Kelsey Smith were double winners for Cass. Langley won in the 100 hurdles (:16.96) and 300 hurdles (:52.03), and Smith took first in the 100 dash (:13.09) and 200 dash (:27.19).

The Kings also won the 4x100 relay (:53.24) and 4x400 relay (4:25.43).


BOYS TRACK

WESTERN 78, EASTERN 56, CASS 33

Zach Shahan, Cameron Dessing and Josh Everetts were each triple winners to lead Western to victory.

Shahan won the 100 in 11.5, won the high jump with an effort of 5-10 and was on the winning 400 relay with Dessing, Stacy Hutchinson and Mica Beard (45.1).

Dessing won the 110 hurdles in 16.7 and the 300 hurdles in 43.7. Josh Everetts won the 1,600 in 5:14, the 800 in 2:09 and was on the winning 3,200 relay team with Auston Davenport, Tyler Lechner and Andrew Granfield (9.23).

Also, Hutchinson won the 200 in 23.8, and Corey Hinkle won the discus with a throw of 129-7.

We scored a lot of points with first places — we won 10 of the 16 events,” Western coach Gary Jewell said. “We scored twice in the 100, the 200 and both hurdle races, which was good. We’re getting some depth. We scored twice in the [800].

Eastern had a strong outing in field events. Andrew Doak won the pole vault, clearing 11 feet. Braden Evans won the long jump with a season-best leap of 20 feet. And Brent Bachman won the shot put with an effort of 40-11.5.

“I thought the kids worked hard,” Eastern coach Tom Everett said. “Western has a really strong distance and middle distance group of guys. I thought we competed well.”
