Tipton came in fifth (45), Maconaquah was eighth (41), followed by Peru (9th, 36), Eastern (10th, 35) and Cass (11th, 29). The Panthers were in a race with Hamilton Heights for second place. Western outscored Hamilton Heights 30-3 in the 1,600 and 3,200 run, and Hamilton Heights outscored Western 33-0 in five other events. It came down to the 4x400 relay, where Western placed seventh to get two points and the second-place finish. "While we didn't score in 5 events, it was our all-freshman 4x400 relay team in the slow heat that, depsite dropping the baton on an exchange, gave us the two points that put us ahead of Hamilton Heights," Western coach Gary Jewell said. "In the second race, Tipton didn't finish the race, and we beat two other teams on time." Western's 4x100 relay team of Zach Shahan, Mica Beard, Cameron Dessing and Stacy Hutchinson set a meet and school record with a winning time of :43.56. Shahan along with Josh Everetts ended up being double winners. Individually, Shahan won the high jump (6-2). Everetts won in the 1,600 run (4:43) and 3,200 run (10:39.02). "The school record in the 4x100 relay was a record that those guys wanted to do," Jewell added. "We moved guys around in the line up, and it was an exciting race. We ended up beating Hamilton Heights by :00.01." GIRLS MEET Guerin Catholic won the 11-team invite with a score of 106. Maconaquah was second at 97. Also, Peru was fourth (70), Host school Hamilton Heights was fifth (61), Tipton sixth (59), Eastern was seventh (52), Cass was eighth (42) and Western ninth (32). For the Comets, Danielle Reed won the shot put with an effort of 34-2.5, and Carly Jones took second in the 1,600 in 5:47. "Danielle Reed, that's about a foot over her best throw ever," Eastern coach Michael Goodspeed said. "That's really good to see this early in the season. And Carly Jones then in the mile, that's also a PR for her of about 10 seconds or so. That's really encouraging at this early stage of the season." Tipton's Jessie Sprinkles won the 400 in 1:00.81. Peru's Sidney Fuller won the 100 hurdles in 15.12 and the 300 hurdles in 47.13. Teammate Josie Murphy won the long jump with a leap of 16-4.25. Maconaquah's Maysie Hewitt won the pole vault with an effort of 10-1. Sprinkles' victory, Fuller's two victories and Hewitt's victory each set a meet record. The Panthers had two girls place third in the field events. Madi Shepherd was third in the long jump (15-7.5), and Miranda Pressgrove was third in the high jump (4-8). "I think it was one of those days that we did't have all the girls there," Western coach Brandon Shawhan said. "So, we had newer girls trying different events. The girls did a pretty good job, ending up with some bright spots [Saturday]. They went out and competed very hard. Overall, we had a lot of running, and we were down in numbers this week." |
