Girls Track - Western 82, Kokomo 50

Quadruple winner Nicole Hampshire led Western’s girls track and field team as the Panthers topped Kokomo in an early season measuring stick Tuesday at Walter Cross Field. The Panthers posted a score of 82 1/2 and the Wildkats had 49 1/2.

Hampshire ran the maximum miles a person can log in a track meet (four) and came out on top each time. She won the 800 in 3:05.57, the 1,600 in 6:14.61, and the 3,200 in 14.39.82. She also ran a leg on the winning 4x800 relay team, combining with Reagan Ritchie, Allison McMinn and Erin Knepley to win in 11:04.88.

Also for the Panthers, Madi Shepherd won the 100 in :13.7, Knepley won the 400 in 1:05.33, Ellie Rush won the 100 hurdles in :17.85, and Taylor Nunan cleared 7 feet, 6 inches to win the pole vault. The Panthers also won the 4x400 relay as McMinn, Bretta Tate, Jenna Seaman and Knepley won in 4:34.03.

Western coach Brandon Shawhan called the victory a “great team effort. I’m pleased with the progress we’re making. It’s still early in the season and coming out of spring break I knew this would be an interesting test for us. I’m glad to see we came out and had a strong showing.

For Kokomo, Deju Miller won the 200 in :27.1 and the high jump with a leap of 5-2. Taylor Coram won the 300 hurdles in :52.39, and took the long jump with an effort of 15-6.5 inches. And Mykayla Fowler swept the throws, taking the shot put with an effort of 33-10.5, and winning the discus with a hurl of 92-2.

Kokomo also won the 4x100 relay as Jania Eddington, Nabria Richardson, Miller and Brooke Smith won in :53.29.
