Western's boys and girls track and field teams swept Taylor in season-opening action Monday at Taylor.

Western posted a 100-32 win in the boys meet and a 115-17 win in the girls meet.

In the boys meet, quadruple winner Cameron Dessing and triple winners Zach Shahan, Auston Davenport and Josh Everetts led the Panthers. Individually, Dessing won the 110 high hurdles (:16.9) and 300 intermediate hurdles (:43.9), Shahan won the 100 dash (:11.7) and high jump (6-2), Davenport was tops in the 400 dash (:57.7) and Everetts took first in the 800 run (2:16.9).

Other individual winners for Western were: Stacey Hutchison (200 dash, :23.8); Josh Scott (3,200 run, 11:48); Alex Taylor (1,600 run, 5:28); Corey Hinkle (discus, 130-8); and J.T. Benzinger (pole vault, 10-0).

The Panthers swept the relays. Dessing, Shahan, Hutchison and Mica Beard ran on the winning 4x100 team. Dessing, Davenport, Everetts and Nick Hackler composed the winning 4x400 team. Scott, Davenport, Everetts and Tyler Lechner won the 4x800.

"I thought we ran respectably well given the deplorable conditions we've been training in this spring so far," Western coach Gary Jewell said, noting the rough spring conditions have proven especially difficult for athletes in hurdles and jumps. "We finally got a great day. It was a good day for a meet and we had some good [showings]."

Taylor had a pair of winners — Tyler Delon (shot put, 43-0) and Eli Meadows (long jump, 19-0). Delon added a second place in discus, Stephen Sholty was second in both hurdles events and Dontae Campbell and Tymon Hall went 2-3 in the high jump.

In the girls meet, quadruple winners Nicole Hampshire and Madi Shepherd led Western's charge.

Individually, Hampshire won the 800 run (2:47), 1,600 run (5:55) and 3,200 (12:37.93). Shepherd won the 100 dash (:13.38), 200 dash (:29.16) and long jump (15-3). Hampshire also ran on the winning 4x800 relay team and Shepherd contributed to the winning 4x100 team.

Western's other individual winners were: Azhane Beard (discus, 68-3); Erin Knepley (400 dash, 1:04); Madie Singer (300 hurdles, 1:00.24); Miranda Pressgrove (high jump, 4-9); Taylor Nunan (pole vault, 7-6); and Kim Miller (shot put, 29-2.5).

Western swept the three relays.

"I thought it was a solid start to the season," Western coach Brandon Shawhan said. "I thought the girls came out and competed well. We were happy to have a nice day to finally go out and run. Our goal is to improve again Thursday when we're home to Northwestern. We'd like to improve meet by meet and week by week."

Chloe Sullivan led Taylor. She won the 100 hurdles (:19.18) and was second in the 300 hurdles. Cami Hansen was second in the 800 run and third in the 1,600. Taylor Pemberton was second in the high jump.

"I was really pleased with the effort of all of Taylor's girls," Taylor coach Nick Weicht said.
