Mark Western's Class of 2005 as undefeated while competing in the Howard County Boys Track and Field Meet.
The Panthers wrapped up their fourth consecutive county title Wednesday night at Northwestern on the strength of another standout performance by Tommy Jenkins. The Panthers finished with 113 points to Eastern's 66. Taylor was third at 55 and Northwestern had 28.
While hurdler and teammate Sean Holsapple won the meets high points award, Jenkins completed his career undefeated on Howard County tracks in this meet. The Western senior won the 100- and 200-meter dashes as well as the 400 relay for the fourth consecutive time.
Jenkins' streak nearly came to an end in the 100, however, as it appeared he came out of the blocks late. But he overtook Taylor's lason Thompson and Eastern's Austin Roark in the final 10 meters to win the race in 11.74. Thompson was second at 11.77 and Roark took third in 11.84.
"Tommy didn't have a great start, but he had a very strong finish," Western coach Dana Neer said. "He knew what he had to do to complete being undefeated for four years in two sprint events and a relay. Tommy is a true athlete-coach. He knows what he's talking about and does a good job motivating our younger sprinters."
Blayne Burkholder matched Jenkins by winning the pole vault for the fourth consecutive time and their classmates - Michael Marley, Jacob McDorman and Moshe Risen - all provided key efforts in their events to help. Adam Trost, a senior out for the first time, stepped in and ran a leg of the 400 relay.
McDorman had a pair of seconds in the throws; Rison ran on the winning 1,600 relay and was second in the 400 and Marley took third in the 3,200and fourth in the 1,600 runs.
Holsapple won both hurdle races - setting a meet record in the 300 intermediates - with Kyle Irwin giving the Panthers the second-place spot in each. Both juniors ran on the winning 400 relay and joined Pison and Brad Speck on the 1,600 relay.
"We're scoring in different places. Sean and Kyle, on any given night, we feel they can get 1-2 or 1-3," Neer said. "They've worked hard and are great leaders. We got ,2-3 in both throws and Brandon Youngdale set a meet record in the high jump.
"What I liked was that we were able to go 3-4-5 in the 3200 with Michael having a personal best at 10:11. Luke Minor and Adam Bahler were right there. We're not getting first and third, but we are collecting three places."
Youngdale's height of 6 foot, 4 inches in the high jump broke a record that went back to 1976. Pete Hahn of Northwestern owned the previous mark of 6-3.75.
Eastern's effort was topped by thrower Zach McDowell, who had two firsts, while Roark provided a first in the long jump. The 3,200 relay of Brad Dean, Brent Hickman, ]ohnathan Fantier and Tony Martin was the other winner for the Comets.
Taylor senior Christopher Sinnett wrapped up his county meet career by holding off Martin not once, but twice, to win the 1,600 and 3,200 runs. Northwestern's Zavier Sanders laid claim to the 400 dash title and teammate Matt Ullmer came away with the 800.
