Records highlight Panthers win Western's Brandon Youngdale and Blayne Burkholder left Monday's track and field meet against Lewis Cass with some outstanding memories. Youngdale put his name in the record books by breaking the school's 31-year-old record in the high jump. His leap of 6 feet, 5 inches pushed aside the 6-4.75 height that Bruce Reed cleared in 1974. Burkholder re-established his own record in the p0ole vault for the third time in three days as the Panthers posted a 118 - 23 win. He first broke his recor Saturday with a vault of 14-9 at the Big Orange Invitational. He broke it again at 15-1 Monday before clearing 15-6 on his second attempt. "Brandon began visualizing [the record] last year when he got 6-3. He had high hopes and attempted it sevearl times," Panther coach Dana Neer said. "Obviously the day and the wind was nice and he was jumping well from the beginning. "It was the perfect scenario for Blayne. He had a lot of friends and relatives down at the pole vault pit." The fathers of both Youngdale (Skip) and Burkholder (Bill) coach the Panthers in their respective events and that made it even more special, Neer noted. "I'm not only very happy for them but for their dads, who have invested a lot of time," he said. "They not only caoch their sons, but the rest of our kids. They do an outstanding job with them as well. This is great for both families and I'm thankful for them being a part of our team." Multiple winners for Western included Sean Holsapple, Jacob McDorman, Michael Marley, Ryan Orr, Tommy Jenkins, and Alex Sigler. The Panthers managed to sweep both the high jump and pole vault as well as the long jump and 3,200 meter run. "After competing at such an intense level Saturday, we were wondering how our boys would respond. It was a beartiful day and while the guys weren't at the top, they competed at a good level," Neer said. Clay Mannering won the intermediate hurdles for the Kings and picked up a second blue ribbon by running th lead leg of the 1,600 relay with Richard Woolever, Matthew Burkhart and Scott Plank.
