TRACK AND FIELD: HOOSIER CONFERENCE MEETKokomo Tribune - Sunday, May 6, 2016 |
Western senior Cameron Dessing and Northwestern senior Owen Munson had big performances in the Hoosier Conference meet Friday night at West Lafayette. Dessing broke his own school record for the second time in 10 days, finishing second in the 300 hurdles with a time of :39.62. Western tied with Twin Lakes for third place with a score of 77. West Lafayette was first with a score of 155. Hamilton Heights took second at 113. "We had some outstanding performances," Western coach Gary Jewell said. "I would say the two most entertaining events were the 300 hurdles and the 200 dash. In the 300, Cameron went from behind to being in front and then he caught two hurdles in the home stretch." Dessing was third in the 200 at 23.31 and the 100 (:11.47). He also teamed with Josh Everetts, Quaylen Calvin and Nick Hackler for a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay (3:36.76). The Tigers' Munson won the 400-meter dash in a meet-record time of :49.25. He took second in the 200 dash in :22.33. He bettered the Tigers' school records in both. "I couldn't be prouder of Owen," NW coach Dave Stevens said. "He has worked hard for four years. He just keeps exceeding all the limits that I can set for him. I'm proud of him and excited for him." Also for Western, Everetts was second in the 1,600 (4:38.44), third in the 800 (2:05.23), and joined Hackler, Andrew Granfield and Tyler Lechner to finish third in the 4x800 relay (8:42.13). Tyler Gilbert threw a career-best 143-9 to take second in the discus. "If you want to compete in this meet, you have to be prepared to do whatever it takes," Jewell said. "West Lafayette is talented and deep." Also for Northwestern, Munson helped the Tigers take third in the 4x400 relay. Joe Johns, Spencer Hutchins, Joe Mast and Munson clocked 3:38.27. Northwestern finished seventh. "My team, up and down our roster, we set season bests in many events and personal bests in many events," Stevens said. "I'm glad the guys are keeping with it. It's been a tough year — it was only our fifth meet." GIRLS MEET Western finished sixth in the 10-team Hoosier Conference meet Friday night at West Lafayette. The Panthers had third-place finishes from Elle Rush (100 hurdles) and Taylor Nunan (pole vault). West Lafayette ran away with the team title. |
