Western posted a score of 68 to top fellow Hoosier Conference schools Hamilton Heights (54) and Northwestern (36) in a triangular at Northwestern. Josh Everetts and Mica Beard won two individual events apiece to lead the Panthers. Everetts ran to wins in the 1,600 (5:08.9) and 800 (2:15.8) and Beard won the long jump (17-5) and 300 hurdles (:45.3). Everetts also anchored the winning 4x800 relay team. Andrew Granfield, Tyler Lechner, Nate Nicholson and Everetts clocked 8:58.5. Also for the Panthers, Cameron Dessing won the 200 dash (:23.2) and Josh Scott won the 3,200 run (11:10.3). "We got points from a lot of different places," Western coach Gary Jewell said, noting solid efforts from Dessing (110 hurdles), Beard (100 dash), Tyler Gilbert (discus), Ricky Bearden (shot put), Jordan Hicks (long jump), Nick Hackler (400 dash) and others. "Our distance guys racked up 29 of our 68 points." Northwestern had three winners. Joe Mast won the high jump (6-1), Owen Munson was tops in the 400 dash (:52.3) and Mast, Joe Johns, Spencer Hutchins and Munson won the 4x400 (3:39.1). "Second meet right after spring break, usually it's a tough meet," NW coach Dave Stevens said. "I'm proud of my guys. I think all my guys gave what they had. We had a lot of sore legs. My veterans went out there and competed. Some of the younger guys improved a lot. Heights and Western are really good track teams, that's where we want to be, but we're not quite to their level yet. We have the rest of the season to catch up." Stevens also noted Hutchins' second place in the 1,600 and Cameron Curry scoring in three events as Tiger highlights. |
