Kokomo senior Jeremy Breedlove and Western junior Corey Hinkle turned in big performances in the IHSAA boys track and field regional Thursday night at South Bend St. Joseph. Breedlove finished as a double winner. The IUPUI recruit won the 1,600-meter run in 4:15.19 and the 3,200 run in 9:38.89. Hinkle won the discus competition with a fling of 153 feet. Breedlove and Hinkle advance to the state finals on June 7 at Indiana University. They’ll lead a strong KT-area contingent. Also advancing are Western’s 4x800 relay team, Western senior Matt Grider in the 3,200 run, Kokomo junior Avery Barrett in the pole vault, Eastern senior Will Porter in the 100 dash, Maconaquah senior K.J. Walton in the 200 dash and Northwestern senior Cameron Oden in the 200. |
The top three finishers in each event plus anyone meeting the state standard advance to state from regional meets. Western’s 4x800 relay team of senior Jacob Bradshaw, junior Auston Davenport, Grider and freshman Josh Everetts posted a third-place finish in a time of 8:05.45, which is a new school record and a new all-time area best. Grider was third in the 3,200 in 9:46.83. Barrett was third in pole vault with a jump of 13-6. Porter was fifth in the 100 dash in :11.14. And in the 200, Walton was second in :22.41 and Oden was third in :22.51. Warsaw edged Penn, 77-76, for the team title. Kokomo (38) was fifth and Western (26) was sixth. |
