"We had lots of seconds and thirds as well," Eastern coach Michael Goodspeed said. "Outside of Avery Ewing and Carly Jones we're pretty young, and we're doing the best we can in sprints and hurdles with freshmen. We're doing all right. I'm pleased with some of the results, and the meet was very close."

BOYS MEET

WESTERN 75, EASTERN 60, CASS 32

Western was able to overtake the Comets in a triangular meet in Walton after finishing behind Eastern in the standings of Saturday's Hamilton Heights Relays.

George Conwell and Zach Shahan were both double winners for Western (5-1). The duo tied for top honors in the high jump after clearing 6-2. Conwell won the 110 hurdles in :16.4, and Shahan teamed with Christian Glenn, Cameron Dessing and Braedon Cannon to win the 4x100 relay in :44.7.

Matt Grider added a victory in the 1,600 in 4:50, and Jacob Bradshaw rounded out Western's winners in the pole vault, clearing 10-0.

"I thought it was a good, solid team for us," Western coach Marvin Boswell said.

"I'm really proud of the way the kids came out and competed and I think our depth really showed as we scored two people in a lot of events. That helped us secure the win. I'm really proud of me kids, for the way they bounced back from the Hamilton Heights meet and got on the other side of it."

For Eastern: Lewis Duke won the 3,200 in 9:46, one second off of school-record pace. Eastern coach Austin Roark commended Western's Grider for rabbiting Duke in the race.

Joshua Sommers was a triple winner for the Comets, winning the 400 in :51.9 and the 800 in 2:11.9. He also teamed with Nick Handy, Kevin Zheng and Duke to win the 4x800 relay.

Riley Haupert was a double winner, taking top honors in the 300 hurdles (:42.3) and 200 dash (:23.5). Papee Byers rounded out Eastern's winners in the long jump (19-11 1/2).

"I'm happy," Roark said. "If you look at our numbers, we had some great performances. We're still running without a few guys, but that's not an excuse. If you look down the line at our big performances, those will do well at the sectional, and that's what we're about right now."
