Western's boys track and field team *finished first Saturday in the small school division of the Hoosier State Relays indoor track and field state competition held at Purdue University. The small school division (for schools from football classes 3A, 2A and A) featured 33 teams. Western finished with 77 points. Fort Wayne Concordia was second at 47, Brebeuf third with 46, Eastern was fifth with 26.33 and Northwestern was ninth with 22. Corey Scott had a big day for the Panthers winning the 3,200 and helping Western win the distance medley relay. Scott ran the 3,200 in 9:22.93 and teamed with Austin Young, Brad DiCarlo and Zac Martinez in the Distance Medley Relay to finish in 10:56.67. Western had, two relays take second. Jerel Hall, Jake Askren, Indy Mathew and Lucas Luckey took second in the 4 x 200 Relay in 1:32.76. And Western finished second in the 4 x 800 relay as Martinez, DiCarlo, Chris Love and Kody Harmon covered the course in 8:25.24. The Panther 4 x 400 Relasy team of Hall, Chris Harter, Dalton Head, DiCarlo took third in 3:37.06. Individually for Western, Dean Shepherd was seventh in the pole vault, clearing 13 feet, and Austin Young was eighth in the 3,200, finishing in 9;55.29. "It was a real big day," Western coach Marvin Boswell said. "The kids just performed well." Also competing in the Class A-3A division, Northwestern and Eastern had strong finishes too. Brock Ford led the Tigers by taking second in the shot put with a throw of 49-10. In the 3,200 relay, the team of Ryan Pattison, Kory Kennedy, Sam Freeman and Jeremy Robison took fifth with a time of 8:33.24. In the distance medley relay, Freeman, Michael Schulte, Robison and Kennedy took sixth in 11:19.38. Eastern's best showing came in the 1,600 relay where Hansen Martin, Drew Maple, Mitch Padfield and Brett Buck-master turned in a winning time of 3:34.91. Also for the Comets, Kevin Jackson took second in the pole vault competition by clearing 14 feet. |
