Panthers cruise to opening wins

Western opened the boys and girls track and field season by running past Taylor Monday. The Panthers' boys team swept all events in defeating the Titans 124-8, and Western's girls team took 13 of the 16 events in winning 104-28.

In the boys meet, Patrick Lennon, Jerel Hall, Kyle Young, Zac Martinez and Alex Sigler were triple winners. Lennon won in the 110-meter hurdles (15.7) and 300 hurdles (:43.1). Hall was tops in the 100 (:11.5) and 200 dash (:23.6). Young won the 400 dash (:53). Martinez claimed first in the 800 run (2:09) and Sigler was tops in the high jump (6-foot).

Lennon, Martinez, Young and Sigler teamed to win the 1,600 relay (3:45.2). Hall and Sigler joined Ryan Elmore and Kyle Brown to take the 400 relay (:45.8), and Martinez and Young teamed with Corey Scott and Chris Love for a victory in the 3,200 relay (9:02.3).

"Lennon ran extremely well," Western coach Marvin Boswell said. "his :15.7 [in the 110 hurdles] was extremely impressive. He kind of left off where he was last year. Hall and Kyle Brown were neck and neck in the sprint races"

The Panthers' Austin Young won the 1,600 (4:57.0) and 3,200 run (11:06) to become a double winner.

Other winners for Western were Trevor Buckalew (shot put, 38-1.5), Bart Shepherd (discus, 124-1), Trent Lawlyes (pole vault, 14-0) and Indy Mathew (long jump, 18-11.5).

In the girls meet, Sable Staller was a quadruple winner. Staller won the 400 dash (1:07), high jump (5-2) and long jump (15-1). Jenn Elliott, Lacey Myer and Shelby Spall joined Staller to win the 1,600 relay (4:51.4).

"We had a [quadruple] winner in Staller," Boswell commented. "She is only a freshman, so, she is getting off to a great start"

Cara Earlywine and Elliott are triple winners. Earlywine won the 100 (:13.1) and 200 dashes (:278), and Elliott was tops in the 800 run (2:41.8). Earlywine was joined by Danae Rittmann, Jennifer Dale and Alleca Kurker in winning the 400 relay (:52.6). Besides the 1,600 relay, Elliott joined Kayla Gaskins, Lacey Myer and Corianne Myer to take the 3,200 relay (10:512).

Lizi Chandler, Kayla Gaskins and Lacey Myer were double winners. Chandler won the shot put (33-0) and discus (954). Gaskins also claimed the 1,600 win (5:58.7).

Western's other winner was Ashley Gaskins in the 3,200 event (13:06).

Liz Mamaril was a double winner for Taylor. Mamaril won the 100 hurdles (:18.6) and 300 hurdles (:55.5). Teammate Hannah Hawkins was tops in pole vault, (9-0).
