Western Vs Taylor Western 74, Taylor 58 GIRLS TRACK
The Panthers’ depth delivered victory at Taylor, despite a pair of school records by the Titans.
Western’s Jenn Elliott won the 3,200 (in 13:10.6), the 1,600 (6:02.6) and teamed with Madi Briscoe, Kiley Camp and Lacey Myer to win the 3,200 relay (10:27.02). Briscoe also took first in the 800 (2:43.4). Jennifer Dale won the pole vault (7-feet, 9-inches), Liz Chandler won the shot put (33-8), Morgan Legan won the high jump (4-11) and Kristen Tiedeman won the discus (93-3) for the Panthers.
“Our distance girls did a great job,” Western coach Heather Yentes said. “They pulled off a lot of wins and got first and second in the 1,600 and 3,200. The girls did great in the field events and got first and second in shot put, and discus, and high jump.”
Western also took third in the shot put.
Taylor’s effort was highlighted by a school record of 51.2 in winning the 400 relay. Sharayah Head, Lindsey Corbitt, Britni Oliver and Jessica Wininger comprised the record-setting team. Wininger and Head were on the team which set the record in 2006. Also, Corbitt set a Taylor record in winning the 300 hurdles in 51.15.
Also for the Titans, Head won the 100 (13.4) and 200 (27.9) and was part of the winning 1,600 relay team with Wininger, Kaitlynne Smith and Bridgitte Mendenhall (4:34.7). Corbitt also won the 100 hurdles (16.9), Oliver won the long jump (15-5), and Mendenhall won the 400 (1:06.8).
“I thought we improved from the last meet, last Thursday at Tipton and set two school records, which was nice,” Taylor coach Al Tunmer said. “We’re coming along. We’re improving every meet.”
BOYS TRACK
Western 92, Taylor 40 Depth paid off for Western on the boys side as the Panthers pulled away from the Titans.
Individually, Patrick Lennon won the 110 hurdles (15.6) for Western, while Kyle Brown won the 100 (11.62) and the 200 (23.8), Zac Martinez won the 1,600 (5:06.7) and the 800 (2:13.5), Kyle Young won the 400 (56.3) and high jump (5-9), Kyle Gann won the shot put (45-2), and the pole vault (14-6) and Corey Scott won the 3,200 (11.21).
Brown, Ryan Elmore, Aaron Trost and Lennon teamed to win the 400 relay for Western (44.5) and Tom Grider, Scott, Austin Young and Martinez won the 3,200 relay (9:27.4).
“I do think our depth in the distance — able to sweep each of the distance events — was the big key for us,” Western coach Dana Neer said. “We were able to go 1 through 4 in the 4 by 800. That was great to see those 16 guys run and sweep the first four places there.”
Neer also noted a strong performance by Dean Shepherd to take second in the pole vault at 13-6.
For Taylor, Zsan Black won the long jump (20-1), Zach Washington the discus (111-7), Austin Conwell took the 300 hurdles (43.7) and the Titan 1,600 relay team of Andrew Aaron, Conwell, Shawn Fogleman and Ishan Gohil finished first in 3:43.9.
“That’s about as good as we were running the [1,600] relay at the end of last season,” said Taylor coach Steve Hanlon. “Conwell winning the hurdles — he’s a freshman and that’s the second time he’s run a complete 300 hurdles, and that’s a pretty good time. He’s really rough right now on the hurdle technique, but he really gets after them.”
